Intellectual Property Online
Angela Merkel has called for a rigorous implementation of existing Urheberrecht principles and regulations online. I strongly support this message, based on the following set of beliefs and experiences: (1) “Intellectual Property”. No work would exist without the talent, energy, knowledge, and vision of the author, and it will never be completely dissociated from them. Before we speak of property, we must speak of accomplishments. Anglo-saxon notions of Copyright and the German approach to Urheber differ … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Monets “Camille” in der Bremer Kunsthalle
It’s a very striking painting of a lady, full of determination, in a black-green gown, turning away from the viewer, but only just, into a future with her husband, the painter Claude Monet. This is certainly not a happy painting. There is little hope in it. The foreboding sense of gloom is highlighted (or, rather, further darkened) by the sheer, enormous size of the image. It is on view at the Kunsthalle in Bremen, where … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

“This One’s Already Dead”
I’m standing in line to get an espresso at Starbucks at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. Realising that I have no more Euro coins, I ask the busy-looking and utterly present barrista whether I could pay in Pounds. He says yes, takes my order, and tells me to pay with „my colleague,“ presumably one of the three cheerful girls surrounding him. Adding that I should have a glass of water with my espresso, „for me,“ he asks … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

King Ludwig II and David Siegel, both building Versailles
On two consecutive nights during the holidays, I watched two films that turned out to be like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in addressing two sides of human ambition, erudition (or lack thereof), creation – and looking at Versailles. Here’s what I saw. First, „Ludwig II,“ the first film about Bavaria’s most unusual king in quite a while. The son and grandson of patrons of the arts, he dreamt of turning Bavaria – which, true to … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Don’t be Out of Touch
Last week I filed my taxes (yes, I know, nice and early and organized …), enjoying the simple, newly-designed Citizentax interface. Sadly, in the process of their relaunch they got rid of my favorite field: “If you have more than five children, click here.” However, there is a new sequence of questions which I enjoyed. First question: “Can anyone claim you as a dependent?” I clicked No, only to be asked the following question: “Are … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Scheduling Meetings Across Time Zones
How many times has someone in a different time zone been waiting for a call from you, patiently at first, and then more and more annoyed? The reason why you didn’t call was not that you are a mean person but simply that you got your time zones mixed up. While your friend in New York was waiting for your call to come in at 9 am Eastern Time, you were having lunch in London, … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Josef Haslinger’s New Novel Jáchymov
Josef Haslinger’s latest novel is a quiet tribute to Bohumil Modrý, a former goalkeeper of the national Czechoslovak ice hockey team and 1947 world champion. Haslinger – author of a bestselling book of fiction about a terrorist attack on the Vienna opera ball – merges personal stories and world (political and sports) history. The eponymous Jáchymov was the site of a uranium mine exploited by forced labourers in the 1950s. Modrý and most of his … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Thoughts on Occasion of Tomas Tranströmer’s Nobel Prize
Physicists at CERN are concerned: did they just witness something move faster than light? In a recent experiment, neutrinos reached an underground detector in Abruzzo earlier than photons would have gotten there. What’s the big deal, I ask. Just think of the animals. You might have determined that some are faster than others, and one is the fastest (say, the cheetah). Then you discover a new continent and, lo and behold, there are animals which … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »

Letters on Love and Death
The correspondence between Helmuth James and Freya von Moltke is unique among exchanges of letters in the 20th century. It celebrates the power of life and love in the face of totalitarian rule and imminent death. The mastermind of one of the largest resistance groups against Hitler, the Kreisauer Kreis, Helmuth James Graf von Moltke was arrested by the Gestapo in January 1944. He was detained on the grounds of his alleged involvement with Carl Friedrich … Den ganzen Artikel lesen »
