In einer Kurzgeschichte mit dem schönen Titel “Die Insel, das Unglück, Christoph und ich” beobachten zwei Jungs einander, der eine ist cool, der andere sieht es und ist viel zu warm angezogen. Sie sind auf Klassenfahrt oder im Urlaub auf einer Insel. Der Coole schwafelt, der Beobachtende hört zu und weiß gar nicht, was das soll, und ist immer mehr genervt. Sirenen heulen, die beiden werden Zeuge einer maritimen Rettungsaktion, der Coole wird verhauen. Aber Genaues erfährt man nie. Die elliptische Bildfolge steht in einer markanten Spannung zu den blumigen Formulierungen, die hart an der Grenze zur Parodie liegen, aber nie darüber hinausgehen. Das Schlussbild ist ein Moment der Eintracht, allerdings einer offenen und unversöhnten und vielleicht auch einseitigen. Der Autor: Martin Brinkmann.

Unter den Essays sticht Gerald Funks Plädoyer für Robert Louis Stevenson hervor. Funk wehrt sich gegen die Auswüchse des psychologischen Romans, der die so genannte Hochkultur des 20. Jahrhunderts dominiert hat, gegen “verquälte Innenansichten monomaner Exzentriker, wortreiche Psychogramme hirn- und sprachgeschädigter Kleinkrimineller, sprachlich und narrativ ritualisierte Untergänge Gescheiterter, Selbstmörder voller intellektueller Überheblichkeit, Terroristen aus Menschenliebe, feingeistige Mörder aus Altruismus, sensible Dreckskerle, die das Leben der Frauen aus Liebe zur Hölle machen”. Stevenson führt uns dagegen durch die Welt, flott und spannend. Den Eskapismus der Gequälten, die die Verständnislosigkeit ihrer Mitwelt in unverständlichen Wortschwällen anklagten, darf man fürs Erste auf sich beruhen lassen.

Von mir ist ein Gedicht im Heft enthalten, “Spaarnwoude”, im Gedenken an einen toten Freund — Erinnerung an die letzte Begegnung, bei der Freund schon wusste, dass er kurz danach sterben würde, und nun die Selbstermahnung, mit dem Verlust umzugehen. Acht Zeilen — denn dieser konkrete Freund hatte was gegen nutzlose Redseligkeit.

Die Tendenz dieser Zitate, die in Stefan George: Gedichte für Dich einzeln nachgewiesen sind, habe ich in meinem Buch diskutiert. Nun wird George auch für den Terror des so genannten „Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds“ verantwortlich gemacht. Dieser sei das „geheime Deutschland“, von dem George sprach. Zu dem komplexen Thema „George und der Nationalsozialismus“ daher folgender Hinweis.

Das Thema lässt sich auf vier Ebenen angehen, die miteinander verflochten sind, aber voneinander unterschieden werden können.

Erstens: Georges dichterisches Werk und seine Implikationen. »Geheimes Deutschland« ist der Titel von Georges wichtigstem Gedicht. Es ist ein schillerndes Wort, eine uneingeholte Herausforderung, eine Gemeinschafts-Vi­sion. Im George-Kreis hat es verschiedene miteinander konkurrierende Bedeutungen, je nachdem wer es wann verwendet. Freun­de Georges sahen es als »eine Gruppe von Personen, die dieses verkörpern oder verheißen, zugleich als Vision eines Deutschland, das eine ›innerliche Einheit‹ nach Vorstellungen Stefan Georges darstellt; schließlich wird dieser Begriff auch synonym gebraucht für den George­-Kreis« (Eckhart Grünewald). In dem Gedicht »Geheimes Deutschland« führt George die zentralen Motive seines späten Werks zusammen: Er erinnert sich an Ereignisse und Personen aus seinem eigenen Leben, er stiftet und umreißt eine dichterische Ahnenreihe, re­flektiert den Ersten Weltkrieg und moderne gesellschaft­liche Probleme, und er wirft die Frage auf, wie antikes Griechenland, zeitgenössisches Deutschland und ein uto­pisches neues »Reich« zusammengehören. Das Gedicht zeichnet das Bild einer von Gier und Schamlosigkeit geprägten Zeit. Ein unerwartet auftretendes Fabelwesen verspricht dem Dichter, er werde Anzeichen für eine Alternative zu jener vermeintlich alles beherrschenden Lebensweise finden. Er findet sie in einer Reihe von Gestalten, zu denen Homosexuelle und Juden, Kosmopoliten und Vaganten gehören – nicht das Material, aus dem Nazis werden. In meinem Buch habe ich versucht, die Offenheit von Georges Werk darzustellen, das sich totalitären Vereinnahmungen, deren Zugriff es spürt, immer wieder entzieht. Georges Dichtung steckt einen außergewöhnlich breiten Raum ab, von der voll tönenden Rede vom Neuen Reich bis zu fast biedermeierlichen Bil­dern von vertrockneten Blumen auf der Fensterbank. Sie spricht auch die an, die für ihre verheerenden Ideologien nach Futter suchen. Sie widerspricht ihnen nicht durch ein direktes, womöglich leicht erschöpftes Argument, sondern durch die Bandbreite ihrer Bilder und Themen und die hermeneutische Offenheit ihrer Anlage. Diese Offenheit kann ihren einschränkenden Missbrauch nicht verhindern, sondern immer nur in Frage stellen. Dazu bedarf es aber eines Lesers, der die Fülle der Dichtung an­erkennt.

Zweitens, Georges Äußerungen zur NSDAP. Durch die Publikation der Aufzeichnungen von Clotilde Schlayer, die sich in Georges letzten Lebensjahren um ihn gesorgt und gekümmert hat, erhielten wir dieses Jahr Einblick in Georges distanzierte, ironisierende, die Dramatik der anstehenden Veränderungen ahnende Haltung. Den Antwortbrief, den er an Joseph Goebbels schrieb, hat Thomas Karlauf in seiner George-Biographie untersucht.

Drittens, Äußerungen und Handlungen von Georges Freunden. Das Spektrum reicht von Ernst Kantorowicz, der sich und George mit seiner Vorlesung „Das geheime Deutschland“ (mit dem bestimmten Artikel, der bei George fehlt) öffentlich und unmissverständlich von der NSDAP und ihrer Ideologie distanzierte und ins Exil ging, bis zu Woldemar von Uxkull, der ebenfalls an einer Universität im Rahmen einer flammenden Rede zu zeigen versuchte, dass das gesamte Werk Georges den Nationalsozialismus vorausdeute. Die Spannung vieler Positionen und vieler Graustufen dazwischen hat Ulrich Raulff dargestellt und analysiert. Die unterschiedlichsten Stellungnahmen sollten durch den Bezug auf Georges Werk legitimiert werden. Dessen subversive Komplexität blieb oft unberücksichtigt.

Viertens, die Haltung der Nationalsozialisten selbst zu George. Auch hierzu gibt es eine aussagekräftige Forschungsliteratur (angefangen mit der Dissertation von Martin Siemoneit aus dem Jahr 1978), die zeigt, wie aus dem anfänglichen Versuch der Kooptation während der Konsolidierung des Regimes relativ schnell Indifferenz, dezidierte Ablehnung und klammes Totschweigen wurden.

Es ist nicht nur nützlich, bei Diskussionen über das „geheime Deutschland“ diese Quellen zur Kenntnis zu nehmen, es ist auch eine Frage der Redlichkeit, deren Fehlen gern beklagt wird.

Working on this book is fun, and especially talking to many of you about issues related to friendship. Here’s a list of some questions I still have. Maybe there’s one or two that you find interesting. Your thoughts are most welcome.

1. Barbara Hahn speaks of “friendship at first sight”. What’s your view on this — does it exist? If so, how does it work?

2. The line between friendship and love seems to be quite difficult to draw. Is it all in the language? The film “I Love You, Man” was originally to be called “Let’s be Friends” and has been translated into German as “Trauzeuge gesucht”. So is love just “more than” friendship, or something else entirely?

3. This begs the further question whether we have to talk about friendship and hatred, given that friendship and love are as closely linked as love and hatred.

4. Pope Benedict XVI talks a lot about friendship. I am under the impression that this is emerging ever more clearly as the central social and intellectual issue of his papacy. Do those of you who follow his teaching think that he is on the path to his own theology of friendship? Does he distinguish between love and friendship when he talks about our relationship with God, with Christ, with other people?

5. In my 2011 article I mention Büchner’s play Leonce und Lena, one of the funniest plays ever written in German. Leonce and his friend Valerio flee the palace of Leonce’s father, King Peter, and dress up in various disguises. They encounter Lena who Leonce is supposed to get married to. Since she is wearing a mask, they don’t recognize her. Valerio says he doesn’t even know who he himself is; and neither Leonce nor Lena have any great interest in being who they know they are. So my question is: given how much fun they are having, why do they decide to return to the palace at all?

6. Alexander Pschera’s new book, 800 Millionen, offers the first analysis of social media as a mystical phenomenon that will fundamentally change the way we conceive of love and friendship. Pschera’s book is audacious and insightful, and nothing like you’ve ever even remotely thought of when dealing with, say, facebook. He is particularly interested in the playfulness (Heiterkeit) of online exchanges. Is this a term you like? Have a look at his blog for more info. The book should be coming out within the next few days.

7. Each friendship has its distinct rhythm. There are times of close contact, followed by periods where interaction is less intense. With social media, the difference between these two states seems to be getting blurred. Do we even know when we last wrote to, or talked to, a particular friend? Do we even still need to worry about timing when all the information is out there, on Wall and Info pages, for us to catch up on?

9. Has it occurred to you that you can “hide” stories on facebook but not delete them?

Du schlank und rein wie eine flamme

Du wie der morgen zart und licht

Du blühend reis vom edlen stamme

Du wie ein quell geheim und schlicht

So beginnt das letzte Gedicht von Stefan George. Und da gibt es eine dunkle Seite, obwohl das Gedicht so hell ist und schön. Es ist kunstvoll gebaut und feiert einen schönen, vielleicht auch selbst gut gebauten Menschen. Er ist schlank (das kennen wir) und rein (das verwirrt uns). Auch die nächsten Zeilen sind eigenartig in ihrer Mischung aus Fremdem und Bekanntem. Die meisten von uns haben schon einmal einen zarten Morgen gesehen. Man genießt die klaren Stunden, wundert sich, dass es schon hell ist, wenn man mal besonders früh raus muss, und verspricht sich, das öfters zu tun und zu genießen. Aber dann vergisst man’s und muss von George an den Eindruck erinnert werden. „Geheim“ ist der Angesprochene, aber nicht weggesperrt oder kompliziert, keine Nuss, die man knacken muss, sondern unvertraut und doch nah, und „schlicht“. Nicht blöd, sondern ohne die Verwerfungen, die andere sich in der Welt von Rolle und Analyse einhandeln. Schlicht naiv? Das wäre eine böswillige Unterstellung, deren Urheber sich selbst zum Maßstab macht.

Das Du ist bei mir, es begleitet mich, es bedeutet mir etwas und regt mich an, und ich kann es spüren. Den Duft, das Atmen eines anderen Menschen wahrzunehmen, ist ein intimer Moment. Er gelingt nur, wenn man einander nah ist und wenn es sonst still ist. Wenige Menschen gestatten einander, sich so zu begegnen.

„Du bist mein wunsch und mein gedanke“. Hier klingt nun schon etwas Anderes an, was mit der dunklen Seite zu tun hat, von der ich sprach. „Ich atme dich mit jeder luft“, das sind einfache, schlichte Worte, die zeigen, wie Einklang herrscht zwischen Sprecher und Angesprochenem. „Ich küsse dich mit jedem duft“. Was bahnt sich hier an?

Da kommen eben Lukács, Grönemeyer und Toco ins Spiel. Und wie das geht, steht hier.

Ich habe Höhenangst, vor allem auf Brücken. Ängste sind deshalb so mächtig, weil wir sie nur schwer in Worte fassen können. Tranströmers Zeile erfasst etwas, was in mir vorgeht, wenn ich auf der Brücke über einem reißenden Fluss stehe. Die Zeile bringt etwas zur Sprache, was in mir angelegt war. Sie verschafft „mir“ deshalb einen neuen Zugang zur Realität, weil sie nicht etwas an mich heranträgt, sondern aus meiner Stimme und meinem Blick etwas entfaltet. Sie muss mich nicht durch ein Argument überzeugen. Sie erreicht, was Hofmannsthal so sehnsüchtig insistierend verlangt: Wir erkennen an, „dass es wirklich so ist!“

Ich freue mich riesig über den Nobelpreis für Tomas Tranströmer. In einem kleinen Beitrag für Martina Bergmann und die Freunde Ihrer exquisiten Buchhandlung habe ich das noch etwas weiter ausgeführt. Der Beitrag ist als Sonderdruck bei ihr zu haben — angeblich ein Bonbon…

Whatever travels faster than light actually moves backwards in time, they say. So, if Greek debt were accelerated beyond the speed of light, would it diminish? Alternatively, if all observers of Greek debt (independent of their location) could be shown to be moving at the speed of light, it might also contract. The world of physics is full of miraculous stories. A bit like the world of finance, really.

The real mystery is what prompted the neutrinos to go to Italy anyway, given that Germany was just around the corner. Some researchers have pointed out that the observed potency of the particles can only mean they are in fact examples of the so-called “bunga bunga quark” (a subgroup of the top boson) (no, wait, wasn’t it rather the topless bottom bosom?). If “extra dimensions” are really the way to explain the speed of the particles, Germany stood no chance anyway. Swabian engineers have reason to be concerned. Italy has apparently been able to make extra dimensions available in a remote mountain area at a time when Stuttgart can’t even lay a few train tracks in its city center.

These thoughts were heavy on my mind yesterday. I found myself on a half-empty commuter plane from Detroit to Newark, being offered worthless cookies in exchange for frequent flyer miles. Even knowing where all four emergency exits were located, my mind found no rest. The average house in Detroit is worth around $25,000, and the murder rate in New York City has been steadily on the rise. Shopfronts even in posh Manhattan neighborhoods stay empty for weeks on end. Shouldn’t I be flying some place else? Gurgaon? Or some Chinese city that neutrinos and other futuristic characters can’t wait to reach, although they have to make sure to hold their horses or else they get there when it’s still a thing of the past …

I tried to look at the lights below through the eyes of Tomas Tranströmer — our new Nobel laureate. In his poem “Schubertiana,” himself seeking reassurance in an unstable yet strangely appealing world, he writes: “In the evening-dark of a place outside New York, a look-out point where one glance can encompass eight million people’s homes. / The giant city over there is a long, flickering snow-drift, a spiral galaxy on its side. / Inside the galaxy, coffee cups are slid over the counter, store-fronts beg with passers-by, a crowd of shoes that leave no traces.” It’s the only poem that has ever made me cry. I’m remembering that moment many years ago while we are starting our descent into a present about which we know so very little.

The mastermind of one of the largest resistance groups against Hitler, the Kreisauer Kreis, Helmuth James Graf von Moltke was arrested by the Gestapo in January 1944. He was detained on the grounds of his alleged involvement with Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, the civilian protagonist of Claus von Stauffenberg’s Operation Valkyrie even though Moltke and his allies – among them Jesuits and Protestants, Socialists and Aristocrats – had not joined forces with Stauffenberg. For these suspicions, Moltke spent nine months in Ravensbrück concentration camp before being transferred to a prison in Berlin Tegel.

Extensive accounts of life at both Ravensbrück and Tegel, as well as his trial before the People’s Court, are contained in the correspondence between Helmuth and his wife Freya, which has now been published in Helmuth Caspar von Moltke and Ulrike von Moltke’s diligent edition. The correspondence is unique: no other member of the resistance was able to write such a substantial number of letters from prison. Helmuth wrote in a cell lit around the clock by bright lights, sometimes at sub-zero temperatures, often while handcuffed.

The correspondence is a pedagogical exchange between Helmuth, the intellectual, and Freya, a pragmatist who speaks the language of her heart. Often, the tone of the letters is disturbingly frank. Helmuth discusses with Freya how one can learn to suffer without idealising suffering, and she responds that a rosy outlook on their future would be a clouded vision. Helmuth, almost always “unsad” and serene, reminds her that life should always be lived like that: aware that it could end the next day, and that in death there will be a new beginning. He expresses his confidence that God will be with her at all times.

2. Teaching a course on German humor is just as much fun. We look at cartoons, watch political satire, and various other things. Overshadowed by the death of Loriot, the course comes at the right moment in history, I think.

3. Being told, in no uncertain glances, by my students that I am old is less fun. When I asked them to share anecdotes of Germans and their sense of humor, most of them came up with stories about older people (their parents’ colleagues, seniors on the bus, etc.). I asked them whether they didn’t have anything to say about people from our generation … or, “your generation,” as I quickly had to rephrase. My perceived age is illustrated by the photo at the top of this page. Two years from now, incoming college students will have no recollection of September 11.

4. Being asked to write a year-in-review article about 2011, of all years, is a harrowing prospect. It has been the year of shocking catastrophes (in Japan, in Norway), of momentous upheaval (in the Middle East and North Africa), and of political incompetence in the face of financial desaster. It has also seen social media make even greater inroads into our daily lives. So I have decided to focus on social media and to approach the issue from the two angles that I am most interested in, friendship and intercontinental travel. Suggestions welcome.

5. I am also writing prose fiction. It’s great. I can just make it up. You have no idea how liberating an experience this is. It forces me to confront very fundamental questions that a poet does not usually have to address and that an essayist finds answered in the world he describes. They include, What do people do? What are they interested in? What are the conflicts they get into? Fascinating stuff.

6. Attending an Austrian film series was a real eye-opener. Especially in light of the above questions, watching Götz Spielmann’s “Revanche” was a gripping lesson in plot and character development. All thumbs up, and thank you, Sascha Keilholz!

7. Being in New York for the 10th anniversary of September 11, I learned how many people are afraid of another major attack happening in their city. I witnessed scenes of quiet, profound grief around the site. “Bach at One” at St Paul’s Chapel was a reminder of the power of Bach’s music. There is nothing like it, and I have yet to find another achievement of human culture that matches its ability to convince us that life is worth living. I was also, once again, impressed by the voice of Joshua Mehigan, truly one of America’s finest poets.

8. The effect of entry #3 was mitigated by the following conversation. Me: “Could you tell me where the post office is?” — Dude: “Are you a freshman?”– Me: “Could you tell me where the post office is?”

9. I am looking forward to seeing (and listening to) my first Lully opera, “Atys,” at BAM (BAM!!). “Le roi danse” is an excellent film biography of this glamorous French composer who deserves to be known for his music rather than for the way he died.

10. Can’t think of a good one for 10. Will keep you guys posted.
