Unversöhnte Eintracht und ein Plädoyer gegen verquälte Innenansichten monomaner Exzentriker: Das aktuelle Heft der Zeitschrift “Am Erker” (Nr. 62) widmet sich dem Thema Freundschaft. Enthalten sind Kurzgeschichten, Gedichte und Essays sowie, wie immer beim “Erker”, jede Menge Rezensionen.

In einer Kurzgeschichte mit dem schönen Titel “Die Insel, das Unglück, Christoph und ich” beobachten zwei Jungs einander, der eine ist cool, der andere sieht es und ist viel zu warm angezogen. Sie sind auf Klassenfahrt oder im Urlaub auf einer Insel. Der Coole schwafelt, der Beobachtende hört zu und weiß gar nicht, was das soll, und ist immer mehr genervt. Sirenen heulen, die beiden werden Zeuge einer maritimen Rettungsaktion, der Coole wird verhauen. Aber Genaues erfährt man nie. Die elliptische Bildfolge steht in einer markanten Spannung zu den blumigen Formulierungen, die hart an der Grenze zur Parodie liegen, aber nie darüber hinausgehen. Das Schlussbild ist ein Moment der Eintracht, allerdings einer offenen und unversöhnten und vielleicht auch einseitigen. Der Autor: Martin Brinkmann.

Unter den Essays sticht Gerald Funks Plädoyer für Robert Louis Stevenson hervor. Funk wehrt sich gegen die Auswüchse des psychologischen Romans, der die so genannte Hochkultur des 20. Jahrhunderts dominiert hat, gegen “verquälte Innenansichten monomaner Exzentriker, wortreiche Psychogramme hirn- und sprachgeschädigter Kleinkrimineller, sprachlich und narrativ ritualisierte Untergänge Gescheiterter, Selbstmörder voller intellektueller Überheblichkeit, Terroristen aus Menschenliebe, feingeistige Mörder aus Altruismus, sensible Dreckskerle, die das Leben der Frauen aus Liebe zur Hölle machen”. Stevenson führt uns dagegen durch die Welt, flott und spannend. Den Eskapismus der Gequälten, die die Verständnislosigkeit ihrer Mitwelt in unverständlichen Wortschwällen anklagten, darf man fürs Erste auf sich beruhen lassen.

Von mir ist ein Gedicht im Heft enthalten, “Spaarnwoude”, im Gedenken an einen toten Freund — Erinnerung an die letzte Begegnung, bei der Freund schon wusste, dass er kurz danach sterben würde, und nun die Selbstermahnung, mit dem Verlust umzugehen. Acht Zeilen — denn dieser konkrete Freund hatte was gegen nutzlose Redseligkeit.

As I am preparing to pack up and leave New Jersey, having spent a fantastic semester here as Charlotte M. Craig and Max Kade Writer-in-Residence (Danke, Dr. Craig, Danke, Max Kade Foundation!), I am sifting through my notebooks, looking for unanswered questions. Many of them, of course, have to do with my current book project, on friendship and technology. Others, however, are more broadly to do with the place I am about to leave again. Maybe you can help me with some of these:

The United States of America is too big to fail, or is it?
When a „cute“ girl on College Ave yells at me: „Cookies against Child Abuse!!!“, what am I supposed to say?
Is the Occupy Movement too shy to start a revolution, too aloof to get involved in politics, or both? Which course of action would you prefer? Do you remember the Occupy Movement?
Can you be a fan of portraits by both Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargeant?

Letters on Love and Death

The correspondence between Helmuth James and Freya von Moltke is unique among exchanges of letters in the 20th century. It celebrates the power of life and love in the face of totalitarian rule and imminent death.

The mastermind of one of the largest resistance groups against Hitler, the Kreisauer Kreis, Helmuth James Graf von Moltke was arrested by the Gestapo in January 1944. He was detained on the grounds of his alleged involvement with Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, the civilian protagonist of Claus von Stauffenberg’s Operation Valkyrie even though Moltke and his allies – among them Jesuits and Protestants, Socialists and Aristocrats – had not joined forces with Stauffenberg. For these suspicions, Moltke spent nine months in Ravensbrück concentration camp before being transferred to a prison in Berlin Tegel.

Extensive accounts of life at both Ravensbrück and Tegel, as well as his trial before the People’s Court, are contained in the correspondence between Helmuth and his wife Freya, which has now been published in Helmuth Caspar von Moltke and Ulrike von Moltke’s diligent edition. The correspondence is unique: no other member of the resistance was able to write such a substantial number of letters from prison. Helmuth wrote in a cell lit around the clock by bright lights, sometimes at sub-zero temperatures, often while handcuffed.

The correspondence is a pedagogical exchange between Helmuth, the intellectual, and Freya, a pragmatist who speaks the language of her heart. Often, the tone of the letters is disturbingly frank. Helmuth discusses with Freya how one can learn to suffer without idealising suffering, and she responds that a rosy outlook on their future would be a clouded vision. Helmuth, almost always “unsad” and serene, reminds her that life should always be lived like that: aware that it could end the next day, and that in death there will be a new beginning. He expresses his confidence that God will be with her at all times.

Eckard Kleßmann untersucht den Begriff Goethes von seinen Zeitgenossen – und umgekehrt. Rezension des Buches “Goethe und seine lieben Deutschen” aus Eichborns Anderer Bibliothek.

„Goethe und seine lieben Deutschen“ – da fühlt man sich sofort ertappt, sitzt gerade und erwartet das Urteil des Nationaldichters, der von seiner Nation nicht viel hielt. Er machte sich lustig über ihre ständige Suche nach dem Nützlichen: „Wenn man ihnen eine Blume zeigt, so fragen sie gleich: Riecht sie? kann man Thee davon trinken? dürfen wir es nachmachen?“ Er spöttelte, weil „sie über allem schwer werden“. Barsch sagte er, sie „haben keinen Geschmack“. „Bierbäuche und Schmauchlümmel“ nennt er sie.

Aber das sind „die Deutschen“, wie Eckart Kleßmanns Buch sie im Titel führt, im Rudel-Plural. Im Singular sieht es anders aus: „Deutschland ist nichts, aber jeder einzelne Deutsche ist viel.“ Goethe schätzte Künstler und Wissenschaftler in Deutschland, die sich um deutsche Staaterei und Politik nicht kümmerten, er respektierte die Sprachgemeinschaft der Volkslieder, die Leser Luthers, Klopstocks und Lessings.

Klingt doch ganz versöhnlich. Kulturmenschen statt Hurra-Nationalisten. Aber heute stellt sich die Frage: Sind Menschen in Deutschland, die Französisch, Englisch oder Türkisch sprechen, für Goethe keine Deutschen? Doch. Sein Interesse gilt weniger der deutschen Sprache als der Sprache überhaupt. Er ereifert sich nicht für die Reinigung der Sprache, sondern für ihre Bereicherung. Er streitet für die Vernetzung der Weltliteratur, für Übersetzer und Reiseschriftsteller. Als „Des Knaben Wunderhorn“ erscheint, regt er eine Fortsetzung der Volksliedsammlung mit Texten aus anderen Sprachen an. Als Studenten über die Einheit Deutschlands diskutieren, wendet er sich Arabien und Persien zu.

Stefan George: Dichtung — Ethos — Staat

Im Potsdamer Verlag für Berlin-Brandenburg ist der von Bertram Schefold und Bruno Pieger herausgegebene Band Stefan George: Dichtung — Ethos — Staat erschienen. Er schließt an eine Reihe aktueller wissenschaftlicher Veröffentlichungen zu Georges Werk an, vor allem an den 2006 von dem Philosophen Manfred Riedel vorgelegten Band Geheimes Deutschland. Stefan George und die Brüder Stauffenberg.

Riedels Studie zeigt Georges Dichtung und die davon inspirierten Freundeskreise als Verfechter eines noch verborgenen europäischen Deutschlands. Nationalistischer Verengung genauso entzogen wie radikalen rechten und linken Kampfparolen, bilden sie auf dem Hintergrund klassisch-humanistischer und christlicher Überlieferung ein Gegengewicht zur modernen Weltentzauberung.

Die Beiträger des nun erschienenen Sammelbandes knüpfen an dieses Verständnis an. Zwei umfassende Deutungen zentraler Gedichte Stefan Georges stehen voran. Das Verhältnis zwischen Dichtung und Politik wird von Mallarmé aus beleuchtet und am Scheitern des deutsch-jüdischen Gesprächs im George-Kreis reflektiert. Darstellungen dreier weniger bekannter Personen aus dem George-Kreis (Edith Landmann,Walter Elze und Rudolf Fahrner) gewähren Einblicke in die Lebensführung von Freunden des Dichters.

Grundlegende Erörterungen sind der Frage nach dem Ethischen, dem Verhältnis zur Natur und der Bedeutung der europäischen Überlieferung bei George gewidmet. Sie werden um Bezüge zum Denken Hans-Georg Gadamers ergänzt.

Ten Things I Came to Love While on a Writing Retreat

As many of you know, I have been on an extended writing retreat recently. While this is generally a lonely endeavour, there have been moments of intense non-manuscript-related joy which I would like to share with yall. Here is my list of ten things I came to love while writing my book:

1. Derek Walcott’s new collection of poetry, White Egrets. If you thought there was nothing new to say about the drizzle, read this. If you had lost faith in poetry, read Joshua Mehigan, and this.

2. The BBC’s new Sherlock Holmes series. High on local London flavour, gay innuendo, and quick thinking. Forget James Bond.

3. The trinity of late-night entertainment: the elephant of surprise, the margarine of error, and the sauce of entertainment.

4. The fact that someone in Berlin can yell “Hinsetzen, Fotze!” at a young woman who is blocking his view of a television screen at a WorldCup public viewing event and not get reprimanded.

5. Finance Minister Matthöfer’s retaliation (video at around 3:00) when he was attacked by the leader of the 68ers in a talk show.

6. A song about cloning beans, gnus — and you.

7. The following response: “First, you are drunk. Second, this is not a waltz; it is the Peruvian national anthem. And third, I am not a woman; I am the Cardinal Archbishop of Lima.” Read here what this was the response to.

8. Bach’s French Suite No. 2 in c minor. The opening Allemande is one of the most erotic pieces of music ever written …

9. … rivalled only by the beginning of Saint-Saens‘s second piano concerto.

10. And finally, watching someone dressed up as Lord Nelson walk across the cricket pitch outside the house. “History is now and England,” as they say.

Life Sentences

Here is another list — I’ve collected some of those little flavoring phrases that I am going to miss hearing or saying in English. I’m posting these as my boxes are on their way across the Atlantic. The term “flavoring phrases” is used as an equivalent to “flavoring particles,” which is what popular grammarians seem to call words like “ja, doch” and all those other little German words that, in and of themselves, don’t really mean a whole lot, but if you get them wrong you’ll pay for it. If you can think of good translations for the following phrases, write a Comment. So here we go — phrases I’m going to miss:

1. “Can I steal some of your fries?”

2. (In e-mails:) “I hope this finds you well.”

3. (With great determination:) “There’s no such thing.”

4. (Impatiently, from the back seat:) “Man, it’s a grid … !”

5. Being called “Honey,” “Love,” or “Sweetie” by random administrators.

6. “Daaamn.” (as in “when you studied long and hard all week for an exam you have and you got your test results back and you failed and you was like…….DAMN…”, as seen on the facebook group “Yo it be like … Damn!”)

7. Being told not to whinge but to “keep my pecker up,” and being able to respond, What the FUCK?

8. “Did you get my message?”

9. OK, fair enough, there is a translation for that last one. So here’s one for the road: calling someone a “Turkey nazi” around Thanksgiving time.

Anyways, I’ll be back.

Transition

OK, I don’t like lists but I’ve decided to write two, and I would love you to contribute. As I am about to move back to Germany I would like to think about what I have been missing, and what I will be missing when I’m there. “Abroad” is in inverted commas because it makes no sense. It presupposes an inside/outside dichotomy that is basically 19th century (like me, point taken, Marc). Consider this: you are from Munich — if you go to Rostock, do you feel like you’re in a foreign country? How about when you are in Coburg? See what I mean. In the 2004 European elections, I received ballot papers from authorities in three different countries.

I do appreciate that these lists are bizarre, given how diverse a country Germany is, and how many different countries I subsume under “abroad” (they are my experiences of one year each in Singapore and in Canada, three years in England, and four in the U.S.). However, I do get asked quite regularly what is the “biggest difference between Germany and the U.S.,” or “what do you miss most about your country,” so my lists only reflect the struggles of these conversations. Here they are:

Things German that I DO miss when I’m “abroad”

1. Great local newspapers, and having more than one great national newspaper.

2. Being able to walk to the opera in the evening.

3. People who know how to drive.

4. Politics.

5. Going to church and really knowing what to say.

6. Sandstone and plane trees side by side. Wiesbaden.

7. Listening to Schumann and feeling that we both belong.

8. Not talking about money over breakfast.

9. Having trains in the constitution and wine in the national anthem (kind of).

Things German that I DO NOT miss when I’m “abroad”

1. “No” being an acceptable word in polite conversation.

2. People talking about education who only know one system.

3. Carrying cash.

4. People who are proud of living in an old country but don’t know anything about Frederick II. (neither Hohenstaufen nor Prussia), Otto III., Moltke (pick your favourite), Czernowitz, etc. I know this list is ridiculous. Help me improve it.

5. Racist stereotypes posing as “incovenient truths” on public television.

6. Conversations about linguistic purity with people who don’t write well.

7. Conversations about “the Americans.”

8. The rage (“Eine Katastrophe! Das kann ja wohl nicht wahr sein! Sagt denn da keiner was!”).

9. Being considered naive when I’m trying to be helpful by people who are seen as intellectuals just because they are being cynical.

Cottbus, Potsdam, Halberstadt

Drei Städte im Herbst. Vor Jahren eine Ausstellung mit Bibel-Illustrationen von Chagall in Cottbus. Ich war zu Besuch bei Freunden, hatte den Tag über, als sie arbeiteten, nichts zu tun und probte im Konservatorium Klavierstücke des weithin unterschätzten polnischen Komponisten Karol Szymanowski. Lyrische Intensität, harmonischer Wagemut, das Verglühen einer Epoche, das Verschwinden, das immer noch greifbar ist, spielbar. Aber nicht stundenlang, ich ging also zu Chagall. Besonders beeindruckte mich die Zeichnung eines Engels, nur wenige Striche, und etwas Gelb. Schon sind nicht mehr Striche zu sehen, sondern das Gesicht eines Engels taucht aus der Seite auf und schwebt hier im Osten Deutschlands, an der polnischen Grenze vor mir. Ein Engel.

An dem Oktobersonntag wart ihr beschäftigt.
Ich sah in einer kleinen Ausstellung
Chagalls Engel.

Einige gelbe Linien und ein Lächeln.
Ich erinnere mich an ihn,
und ich schreibe an dich.

Einen Herbst lang, einen anderen Herbst lang, wohnte ich in Potsdam, im Haus des Kunsthistorikers Wilhelm Fraenger. Alles ist dort so, wie er es in den Fünfziger Jahren hinterlassen hat. Die Bibliothek war gerade erfaßt worden, in der Küche benutzte ich die Tassen und Teller, die zwar Sprünge hatten, aber durch die Jahrzehnte an Erfahrung gewonnen zu haben schienen. Unter dem Dach hing der Punching Bag meines Mitbewohners. Tagsüber arbeitete ich, eine dreiviertel Bahnstunde entfernt im Zentrum der Nation, bei der großen Fahne. Spät abends schlich ich im Dunkeln zurück, über altes Pflaster. Solche Heimatlichkeit.

Tschaikowskyweg ist ein Widerspruch in sich.
Die Latten der Gartenzäune schwarz wie Oboen.
Kopfsteinpflaster und Sonntagszeitungen.

Wo wohnte Frau von Meck, und sah sie
aus dem Fenster? Selbstmord und ein
langsamer Satz, den sie sich wiederholt.

Im Museum zur Geschichte von Halberstadt gibt es eine steinzeitliche Leiche, auf die man Steine gelegt hatte, damit ihre Seele nicht entweiche und Unheil stifte. Warum müssen Seelen immer umherstreifen, nicht einmal im Tod können sie ruhig sein. Warum sind Knochen so friedlich, selbst wenn sie zusammengeschlagen werden? Die Frage schien in der so mitgenommenen Stadt Halberstadt besonders brennend.

Damit die Seele der Steinzeitleiche kein Unheil stifte,
legten die Überlebenden Steine auf den Leichnam.
Ausschnitte aus Konventionen.

Die Seele, als sie in die Zukunft ging,
hat die Steine verloren.
Knochen sind friedlicher.
