Thank you for all your birthday wishes, and sorry for being out of touch lately. The following little message, like most of us, will go back and forth between English and German — I hope that’s alright.

The night of my birthday was enjoyable as well, thanks to a well-deserved football victory over Brazil (first since 1998). Eur0 2012 is definitely ours! I still remember Germany’s last title, back in 1996, including the croquet game during half-time …
Und wie geht’s jetzt weiter? Für mich geht’s in zwei Wochen nach Rutgers — und zwar nicht auf einem Billigflug — um dort den deutschen Humor zu erkunden und ein bißchen weiter zu schreiben. Sachdienliche Hinweise willkommen.
All in all, it’s been quite an up-and-down year, not just for Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Japan, Norway, the financial markets, London, Stuttgart, and so many other places but also for many of us. Lives taken, life given (viele Grüße and Jörg und Yuri!). It’s wonderful to know that yall are out there — and it’s quite scary to know that I’ll have to write a year-in-review article for a journal this year. What on earth should I focus on?
And, yes, Amy, it would be great if we could meet for dinner soon, it’s been way to long!
